Benzoyl Peroxide is a chemical agent used for many things including hair dying, teeth whitening and of course as a treatment of acne pimples and zits. It is one of the most effective acne treatments on the market today and come in both gel and cream forms. The concentrations vary anywhere from 2.5%, 5% to as high as 10%.
Recent studies however show that there is no benefit to using gel or creams containing greater than 2.5% concentration of benzoyl peroxide. In fact higher doses cause more harm then good. The likely side-effects of higher doses include: Dry skin, Redness, itchiness, and in some cases extreme skin irritation.
Benzoyl Peroxide and other harsh acne treatments have been known to cause premature skin aging, similar to your skins reaction to repeated sun exposure or persistent acne. It has also been associated with increased risks of skin cancer. In 1995 the FDA issued warnings regarding the use of benzoyl peroxide and changed its status from safe to uncertain.
The alternative to benzoyl peroxide are treatments containing salicylic acid; which is much milder, gentler and just a effective for removing any kind of acne including: body acne, teen acne, adult acne, chest acne and more. The most popular treatment making use of salicylic acid and SD 40 alcohol goes by the name of ClearPores Skin Cleansing System.
I've used both Proactive and ClearPores. Both acne treatments are equally as effective. However the only difference I found is that ClearPores not only treats the pimples on the outside, it also has herbal pill for cleansing the liver to prevent future breakouts. I've often noticed that after using ClearPores it takes months before my acne comes back; whereas with proactive it's only a matter of couple of weeks and the little pimples appear again. I also find that my skin get really itchy, not so much swollen, but really itchy after using proactiv, I guess it's the benzoyl peroxide.
In view of the above, I would recommend ClearPores over Proactiv especially if you have sensitive skin as most women do.
No itcy skin
No dry Skin and no skin irritation
Multiple systems that suits your needs (body, facial acne etc)
Proven to work by thousands of users
Just clear beautiful skin. One of the best in the industry
The most frequently asked question is there anything I can do to protect my clothes from benzoyl peroxide? Some sort of pre-treatment? Or is there a way I can know which clothes Benzoyl Peroxide will bleach and which it won't? (I've found that it doesn't bleach everything-- not my hair, for instance:) Unfortunately, if the color has been bleached out by the benzoyl peroxide, there isn't anything you can do fix it. To protect your fabrics, there also isn't anything you can do. Natural fabrics such as cotton, absorb and react with benzoyl peroxide more than synthetic fabrics. You can avoid getting any on your clothes by waiting until your skin is completely dry before dressing.
In the United States alone, nearly sixty million people are infected with acne, while 85 per cent of teenagers suffer from it. Acne is the most common skin disorder known today. Skin experts and practitioners recommend several natural acne treatments. Here are some that we have compiled just for you.
Wash your face twice a day (thrice at most) with gentle and unperfumed cleanser. Avoid using soaps as they contain harsh chemicals and ingredients that can damage your skin.
Avoid touching your face. Stop putting your hands by your face! I am often guilty of this resting my hand on the side of my head while reading. Also rubbing or bracing your chin is another common problem when thinking. Avoid rubbing, touching, or scratching your skin with your hands. Your hands contain a lot of bacteria that can cause acne flare-ups. It is probably one of the most difficult things to avoid since much of the hand to face contact throughout the day we are unconscious of. Make it a habit to avoid hand contact and be conscious of it during the day to avoid bacteria.
Avoid the temptation to pick, prick and squeeze your acne. This will send the infection deeper into the skin and can cause severe scarring. For mild to moderate acne, you can use over-the-counter topical ointments, solutions, lotions or gels that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or azelaic acid as an alternative to benzoyl peroxide.
Salicylic acid also help cut down the shedding of cells lining the follicles of the oil glands.
Topical antibiotic solutions and lotions can also be applied.
Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic and antibacterial agent and has a drying effect on the skin. It keeps the P. Acnes bacteria at bay along with decreasing facial oiliness, which makes this oil a worthwhile investment.
Sulfur helps to heal existing blemishes by unblocking pores.
Alpha or Beta Hydroxy Acids (AHA or BHA) works by keeping the skin exfoliated. Glycolic acid and Salacitic acid, the most well known of the bunch is a useful adjuvant therapy for mild acne. Mandelic acid, a lesser known one, but one that combines the keratolytic properties of glycolic acid, with natural antibacterial properties that help reduce the presence of P. acnes, may be considered a more effective alpha hydroxy acid in treating acne lesions. It is also much less irritating than glycolic acid, a factor that may be very important to those with sensitive skin who are unable to use other agents such as Retin-A, Benzoyl peroxide, Sulfur, Accutane, or Salicylic acid. It is effective in treating mild cases of acne on its own, and can be used successfully with other therapies on moderate acne.
These acne treatments are usually effective for mild to moderate acne problems only. The effectiveness usually takes several weeks or approximately three to six months to be noticed. For more severe and serious acne conditions, do not hesitate to consult your dermatologist.
All skin types of people vary, they can either be too dry or to oily. The most common problem during the summer is having dry skin. Because of this, a number of products have come up that promise to bring back the moisture in your dried up skin.
The dry skin problem can be remedied by using a liquid moisturizer. When your skin becomes too dry, you should buy the cream moisturizers. It is advisable to apply these after baths because this is when the skin pores are open and are able to absorb the moisturizers quickly.
During the summer season, most people go to the beach to tan themselves while others go to tanning booths. People can also use the liquid moisturizers to get the perfect tan. The only difference between a moisturizer-induced tan is that liquid moisturizers get washed off easily while a suntan fade naturally. The summer is the season when moisturizers are much needed by the body. When choosing the product that is right for you, check the ingredients first to make certain that it does not contain oil. Oil can block pores and results in pimple breakouts and other skin problems.
